Math
Science - We will continue to learn about the earth's surface and landforms. The children will be observing plants from seeds they planted. We're currently learning about the life cycle of a plant.
We will also study the life cycle of a butterfly. There are caterpillars in our classroom right now that we keep watching. We're waiting for them to form their chrysalis.
Towards the middle/end of the month we'll review habitats and information about the zoo (jobs, animals, etc.)
Social Studies - The children have learned about maps and Earth... it's time they learn more about Michigan. We'll be studying Michigan near the end of May.
Celebrations this month - This month is Math Month! Just like reading month, we will have activities throughout May focused on math. Our theme is Math Munchers. (We will make caterpillars munching math equations for our classroom door.)
Language Arts
- Writing upper and lowercase letters correctly
- Short vowels and digraphs (sh, ch, th, wh)
- Simple CVC word practice
- VOWELS (short)
- High Frequency Words (Word Wall Words) - continue to practice at home
- We continue to have our Safari Word Wall Word Hunts on Fridays as a review with all of the words.
- Word family words continue to be introduced. May we are working with the -it, -ub, and -og word families.
- Poetry binders will continue to be sent home on Tuesdays. Please be practicing the High Frequency words found in the binders or as flashcards on this site. They are extremely important to know for reading fluency.
- The children are mastering "Story Champs". We use the signs in as many stories as we can. Ask your child about the motions they've learned to help them out when you read books together.
- Writing: We still continue to practice upper and lowercase letters, periods, and spacing. It would be a great assistance to your child's learning if you practiced stretching a word out to let them here how to spell them (even if it's just phonetically - what they hear). We are also continuing sentence structure practice in our skills books. They have been writing many pieces in their yellow writing journals as well.
Math
- The children have done a great job with their fluency in addition to 5! Please continue practicing addition at home. The more exposure they have to it, the easier their success will come.
- We will continue working with place value and subtraction! We do many activities and work with subtraction for complete understanding. When they read their equations, please have them use the language: ___ take away ___ equals _____. Thank you!
- Some vocabulary your child should know is: addition, plus, subtraction, take away, equals, greater than, less than, equal to, position words (next to, beside, etc.), 10-frame, tens place, ones place.
