Encouraging your child to learn at home and practice with them is a great benefit for their success in their academic education. Here are just a few things they could be continuously practicing:
- practice printing. It is important that your child is able to recognize and write each letter of the alphabet. They could practice this easily at home as will with paper and pencil, crayon, marker, or other writing materials.
- always be reading. Your child brings small books home that we read in school to practice word family words. They should be practicing at home with those books, too. Also, keep practicing the high frequency words found on the site or in their poetry binders. Any books at their level that won't cause frustration are great starters as well.
- recognizing numbers and counting. With the practice of recognizing numbers up to 20 and being able to count that amount will make future math easier for your child.
- simple addition and subtraction. By the end of kindergarten your child will be able to understand the concept of adding together and taking away. Using objects, drawing, or using a number line are helpful ways to help your child visualize how to add and subtract. Please spend time practicing this with your child.
- reviewing classroom and school rules and expectations. Following the rules can be tricky at times, especially with schools breaks, being excited or just plain having a "bad day". It helps for positive behavior in the classroom when your child knows that you are aware of the rules and expectations at school.
